Chronicle of Naples

Naples mourns the deaths of three workers. Cardinal Battaglia: "Don't call them accidental deaths; they tarnish consciences."

Naples awakens once again in pain, wounded by a tragedy that smacks of injustice and the acrid stench of anger. Three workers killed on the job, three lives shattered by a fate shaped by neglect and a lack of safety. The powerful voice of Cardinal Domenico Battaglia shakes the city and Italy as a whole, breaking the silence with words that are more than a prayer: they are an indictment, a call for collective responsibility.

“Don't call them accidental deaths anymore, because they soil our consciences”, writes the bishop in a heartfelt note, which becomes a civil cry. "Dying not at work, but of work, is unacceptable. It's unacceptable to go out in the morning to earn a living and never return."

Don Mimmo doesn't mince his words, and he combines compassion with indignation. He calls things by their names: work, which should be dignity and a future, becomes a death trap. And he asks for courage, from institutions, from businesses, from those who have a public voice and responsibility: There's no more time to waste. We need true social justice, based on rules, prevention, and safety. No mother, no child, no friend should ever receive a phone call announcing a preventable death again.
