National operation against online hate: 27 investigated for neo-Nazism, racism, and apologia of fascism

A vast operation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Special Operations Group (ROS), with the support of the Provincial Commands and coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Brescia in close collaboration with the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate (DNAA), is shaking up Italy.

Since the early hours of this morning, a precautionary measure has been underway against a 21-year-old from Brescia, seriously suspected of crimes related to propaganda and incitement to racial hatred and the glorification of fascism.

At the same time, 26 personal and property search warrants were issued against as many individuals suspected of belonging to far-right virtual groups promoting radical neo-Nazi, accelerationist, supremacist, xenophobic, and anti-Semitic positions.

The investigation: from social monitoring to the nationalist network

The investigation, conducted by the Brescia Anti-Crime Unit of the ROS, began in December 2023 with constant monitoring of the arrested 21-year-old's social media profiles—particularly Telegram and TikTok. This work provided significant evidence against him for the following:

Propaganda of ideas based on racial and ethnic superiority and hatred, including minimizing and denying the Holocaust.

Participation in various virtual groups on the Telegram platform with the aim of inciting discrimination or violence based on race, nationality, or religion.

Apology for fascism

The investigation then extended to these social media channels, identifying 29 additional members, many of whom were between the ages of 18 and 25 (five of whom were minors at the time of the incident), residing throughout the country and now under investigation for the same crimes.

Virtual groups under scrutiny: hotbeds of online hate

The recipient of the precautionary measure was found to be active within several virtual groups, true hotbeds of hatred and discrimination:

“WHITE LIVES MATTER ITALY”: Filled with content that promotes the classification of the human population into races and the superiority of the white race, with discriminatory terms towards other ethnic groups/races.

“VANNAWAFFEN TM”Propaganda promoting ideas that praise Nazism, accelerationism, the classification of the human population into races, and the superiority of the white race in derogatory and discriminatory terms against other ethnic groups, races, and religions. Content apologetic for violent acts against people of color, immigrants, Muslims, and LGBTQ+ individuals has also been detected.

“BLOOD AND SOIL”: Publishing content that clearly expresses white supremacist, neo-Nazi, Holocaust denial, anti-Semitic, or fascist-apologizing ideas.

“FASCIST SPIRIT”: Praise for fascism, Nazism, racial superiority, anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial theories, as well as the dissemination of posts of political, ethnic and social derision.

“HOOLIGANS/NS/WP/WLM”: Explicit references to National Socialism and white supremacy (“WP” stands for “White Power”). Publications with Nazi, white supremacist, and d content were found inside.racial hatred, homophobia, and explicit incitement to crime with invitations to carry out arson attacks, in exchange for cash rewards, against commercial establishments and immigrant meeting places (in foreign territory), as well as to participate in physical fights against people of color.

“UNAUTHORIZED REVELATIONS”: Video content and images glorifying fascism, Nazism, anti-Semitism, and Holocaust denial.

“EUROPEAN IDENTITY”: Dissemination of anti-Semitic, homophobic, and racist posts.

“HOUSE OF THE FASCIST”: Publication of posts apologetic to fascism, Nazism, and anti-Semitic, Holocaust denial content.

Racial and gender hatred are out of touch with the need for peace

This operation by the Carabinieri ROS (Special Operations Unit) is a significant wake-up call regarding the disturbing spread of hate ideologies in virtual contexts, which unfortunately can translate into concrete actions.

Racial hatred, theHomophobia, anti-Semitism and the apologia of totalitarian regimes such as Nazism and Fascism, besides being crimes, represent an anachronistic social regression.

In the current global context, characterized by cultural interconnections and the need to address common challenges that transcend national borders, such as climate change, pandemics, and economic inequality, such forms of intolerance are not only unacceptable but also profoundly irrelevant and harmful to human progress.

It's paradoxical that in an age of such advanced communication and access to information, messages that divide rather than unite persist and spread. History has taught us, at unimaginable cost, the horrors to which ideologies based on the superiority of one race or gender over another can lead. The memory of the Holocaust and the atrocities of World War II should serve as an eternal warning.

Today, more than ever, the real urgency is to promote a culture of peace, inclusion, and mutual respect. It is essential to invest in civic education and media literacy, especially among young people, to counter the spread of distorted and harmful content online.

The battle against hatred is not won solely through police operations, but above all by building a society in which diversity is seen as an asset and not a source of conflict.

Talking about peace means recognizing the dignity of every individual, regardless of their origin, skin color, religion, or sexual orientation, and working for a future based on cooperation and mutual understanding.
