Mayors say no to port expansion.
Tensions are rising along the Amalfi Coast. The new master plan for the Port of Salerno, with its guidelines looking to 2030, is causing unrest in the communities of Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, and Maiori. The plan, which calls for the widening of the western pier—with the resulting elimination of the adjacent beach—and especially the lengthening of the Manfredi pier, is considered a direct threat to the identity, environment, and economy of the entire coastal area, a jewel recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Leading the protest were the mayors of the three coastal towns: Giovanni De Simone for Vietri, Fortunato Della Monica for Cetara, and Antonio Capone for Maiori. They were joined by Italia Nostra and Legambiente, who denounced the devastating impact of a project that risks permanently altering the morphology and livability of the coastline.
Tomorrow morning, at 10:30, the council chamber of Vietri will host a press conference where institutions and environmental associations will reaffirm their firm opposition to planning deemed top-down, lacking a sustainable vision and damaging to a fragile ecosystem.
For the mobilization's promoters, the future of the Amalfi Coast cannot be sacrificed on the altar of port development that appears deaf to the needs of the local communities and blind to the protection of a collective asset. The risk, they say, is that of irreparably compromising the economic fabric based on tourism and landscape, in the name of an infrastructure expansion that appears to ignore the historical and environmental value of the surrounding context.

The new Port of Salerno project seems very complicated and is frightening to residents. The extended pier and the disappearing beach could cause problems for everyone. These aspects need to be given more thought.
