A brutal, racist attack took place in the heart of the nightlife of Qualiano, in the province of Naples.
The victim is an 18-year-old boy from Giugliano in Campania, who was targeted by a group of peers who first hurled racial insults at him, then beat him to a pulp. Six young people were reported to the local Carabinieri station: four are minors.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 29th, around 22:30 PM. The young man, accompanied by a friend and riding his scooter, was riding through the city center when he was approached by two individuals on another vehicle who allegedly cut him off, proceeding in a zigzag pattern.
“You s..t. nigger, as soon as you get off the scooter I'll smash your head in”
An initial altercation ensued, during which—according to the victim's complaint—he was allegedly swore at: "You s***ing nigger, as soon as you get off the scooter I'll smash your head in ," the two attackers reportedly yelled at him. Words that leave no doubt as to the racial hatred underlying the attack.
But it doesn't end there. In the following hours, the 18-year-old encountered the two attackers again in Piazza Rosselli, this time accompanied by a friend. He attempted to clarify things, but the confrontation quickly escalated: one of the two punched him in the cheekbone, followed by kicks and slaps from the second attacker.
The situation escalated when, suddenly, at least ten other youths arrived, systematically joining in the attack. They took turns hitting him with punches, slaps, and even motorcycle helmets.
An unspeakable and collective violence, which left the boy on the ground, with facial trauma and a seven-day prognosis, as diagnosed by doctors at the Pozzuoli Hospital where he was urgently taken.
The victim's younger brother, 15, who had tried to protect him, also suffered the consequences of the gang's fury. He too was attacked and suffered injuries that healed within a week.
Thanks to the rapid investigation by the Carabinieri , who analyzed surveillance footage and videos that went viral on social media, six participants in the brawl were identified: three 17-year-old minors, a 19-year-old, the 18-year-old victim of the attack, and his 15-year-old brother. The latter were formally involved in the brawl but were clearly defending themselves. It is not excluded that some of them may also be charged with the aggravating circumstance of racial hatred.
The investigation is still ongoing to identify the other participants in the attack. Some have reportedly already been identified thanks to witnesses at the scene.
An episode that refocuses attention on the phenomenon of youth violence and, in particular, on the racist tendencies it can take, even in provincial urban settings.
This episode is truly alarming and makes us reflect on the current situation. Unfortunately, racism is a persistent problem in our society, and youth violence is a worrying phenomenon. We must find ways to prevent these attacks in the future.
