Sala Consilina – State Police prevented a potential disaster on the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo by stopping a car traveling the wrong way, causing panic and seriously endangering road safety.
The alarm was raised when a report alerted the Highway Operations Center of a vehicle entering the southbound carriageway of the highway, heading north, near the Sala Consilina junction. A patrol car from the Highway Police Subsection, already present on the affected stretch near Polla, was immediately alerted.
The officers, aware of the extreme danger of the situation – with the driver driving in the overtaking lane, brushing past cars that were proceeding properly – quickly implemented the “safety car” procedure. Positioning themselves in the center of the roadway, they slowed the flow of traffic, creating a protective barrier to avoid devastating frontal impacts.
In a few minutes, the Highway Patrol reached the vehicle going the wrong way, managing to stop it in complete safety and avoiding accidents and damage to people or things. The driver was subjected to the usual checks. He was given heavy fines: his driving license was immediately revoked and the vehicle was placed under administrative seizure for three months.
The timely and coordinated intervention of the police forces allowed us to avoid a tragedy, underlining the importance of the readiness and professionalism of road operators.

It was a very important intervention but it is not clear how it could happen that a car went the wrong way on a highway, these are things that should not happen. The police did the right thing.
I don't understand how it is possible for a vehicle to enter the highway in the opposite direction, more checks must be done to avoid these cases. Road safety is fundamental for everyone.
