Two Neapolitans arrested for fraud in Brescia
BRescia – Another dramatic episode related to the phenomenon of scams targeting the elderly. Two men, posing as Carabinieri officers and experts from the Prosecutor's Office, have been jailed on charges of fraud and aggravated extortion against a family in Brescia.
The victims of the scam, which took place on February 4th, were a couple in their sixties and their daughters, forced to hand over cash and gold items with a total estimated value of 100 euros.
According to investigations conducted by the Flying Squad of the Brescia Police Headquarters, the two arrested men—DS, born in 1975, and FM, born in 1978, both originally from the province of Naples—appeared at the door of the house after receiving a fraudulent phone call from the family.
An accomplice, still unknown, had announced the arrival of fake officers for an alleged search related to a robbery committed with a car belonging to the family.
Shortly thereafter, one of the two suspects managed to gain entry to the home, falsely identifying himself as a public official and, boasting of serious legal consequences for non-cooperation, intimidated the homeowner into handing over €8 in cash and approximately €90 in jewelry. He also allegedly implied he was armed.
The rapid investigation led to the identification of the two alleged perpetrators, dubbed "travelers" due to their origins in Campania and their systematic criminal activity while traveling. They were identified by the victim, and, at the request of the Brescia Public Prosecutor's Office, the investigating judge issued a precautionary detention order, which was executed in recent days.
In addition to the arrest, Brescia Police Chief Paolo Sartori also issued the two mandatory expulsion orders, banning them from returning to the municipality of Brescia for the next four years. Violations of these orders could result in up to 18 months in prison and a fine of €10.
"This type of scam is among the most heinous, as it targets the most vulnerable, deceiving them with insidious and well-orchestrated scams," stated Police Commissioner Sartori. "For this reason, the State Police has long been engaged in prevention and awareness-raising activities, ensuring that the elderly and their families are increasingly aware of the dangers and ready to report them."
An episode that fits into the wider drama of the scams for the elderly, a phenomenon that is unfortunately growing, which continues to claim victims among the most vulnerable people, often alone and unprepared to face such deceptions.
