Rocca di Papa – Five years after the death of his son Giuliano, beaten to death over a paltry debt of 25 euros, Guglielmo Palozzi has decided to take justice into his own hands.

This morning, in the heart of Rocca di Papa , a town in the Castelli Romani area, a 62-year-old sanitation worker shot and killed Franco Lollobrigida, 35, the man already convicted on appeal for his son's death. A tragedy within a tragedy, casting a dark shadow over private vengeance and its irreversible consequences.

The Day of Vengeance: A Fatal Encounter

The murder took place in Via Roma, near Piazza della Repubblica, in a busy area with public gardens and the bus terminal. Palozzi was out with his street cleaning cart. It is not yet clear whether the meeting with Lollobrigida was casual or premeditated, but what is certain is that the situation has escalated.

According to initial reports, Lollobrigida was hit by a single bullet in the back, which grazed his aorta. The man, mortally wounded, managed to walk a few meters before collapsing to the ground. Customers of a nearby bar witnessed the scene, amid screams and desperation.

Despite the timely intervention of a medical car and several ambulances, there was nothing that could be done for Lollobrigida.

Guglielmo Palozzi was stopped shortly after by the Frascati Carabinieri and did not resist. Investigations are underway to recover the murder weapon, which is presumed to be a revolver, given that no shell casings were found at the scene. The military is acquiring footage from security cameras to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the encounter. The motive, however, appears dramatically clear.

A family and legal drama

The story has its roots in January 2020. Giuliano Palozzi, son of Guglielmo, 34 years old at the time, was beaten by Lollobrigida for a debt of just 25 euros. After months of agony in the hospital, Giuliano died.

The legal process was tortuous. In October 2023, Lollobrigida admitted to investigators that she had punched Giuliano, but claimed that she had acted in self-defense and that others may have attacked Palozzi after her intervention. In February 2024, the Court of Assizes acquitted him.

However, last May, the Court of Appeal overturned the sentence, sentencing Lollobrigida to ten years in prison for manslaughter. Despite the sentence, her lawyer appealed to the Supreme Court, which is why Lollobrigida was still at liberty and allowed to circulate in the country.

Personal Revenge: Justice or Further Tragedy?

The murder of Franco Lollobrigida by Guglielmo Palozzi raises profound questions about personal revenge. This drama within a drama forces us to reflect: is revenge worth it? Is it right to act this way?

Palozzi, who had already lost a son in tragic circumstances, now loses his freedom, condemning himself to an uncertain future in prison. His family, already devastated by the loss of Giuliano, will have to face a new, devastating reality. It is difficult to imagine the satisfaction, if there was any, in an act that does not restore the life of the lost son and that drags another existence into the abyss.

Justice, however slow and sometimes perceived as ineffective, has its mechanisms. Lollobrigida's conviction on appeal, although contested and awaiting the Supreme Court, was a step in that direction. However, the pain and resentment accumulated over five years prevailed over trust in institutions, leading to a choice that, although understandable from a human point of view, inevitably produced only further tragedy.

This episode reminds us that revenge, as much as it may seem like an immediate response to unbearable pain, only fuels the spiral of violence, without bringing true peace or justice. Indeed, it often ends up creating new victims and new suffering, trapping those who pursue it in an endless cycle of pain and regret.
