Cagliari – Sardinia mourns a second victim of the bValeria Sollai, 62, died last night in the intensive care unit of the Monserrato hospital, where she had been hospitalized for weeks in very serious conditions.
Like 36-year-old Roberta Pitzalis, who died on August 8, she had attended the “Fiesta Latina” in Monserrato at the end of July, consuming guacamole-based dishes that were found to be contaminated with the killer bacteria.
The case, which has shocked the Sardinian community and brought the spotlight on food safety at summer festivals, continues to escalate. At the center of the investigation remains Christian Gustavo Vincenti, owner of the kiosk that served the products believed to be contaminated: he is the only suspect, with an increasingly burdensome case opened by the Prosecutor's Office.
Meanwhile, the patients' battle continues. A 14-year-old remains hospitalized at the Monserrato Polyclinic, while four other poisoning victims have already been discharged from the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari. An 11-year-old boy, transferred to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, is showing signs of improvement, but—doctors clarify—the recovery process will be long and complex.
The autopsy on Roberta Pitzalis, performed in recent days, confirmed that she died from botulism poisoning, complicated by hemorrhagic pneumonia that developed during intubation. Prosecutors are now awaiting further clinical and toxicological findings to accurately reconstruct the chain of responsibility.
An affair that has kept Sardinia in suspense for weeks and which raises disturbing questions about the management and controls of food products distributed at public events.
