Ischia — A vast fire has been ravaging the hilly area of Succhivo, in the municipality of Serrara Fontana, behind the picturesque village of Sant'Angelo, on the southwestern side of the island of Ischia.
The flames, driven by a strong mistral wind, spread rapidly, burning hectares of Mediterranean scrub and threatening homes and tourist facilities.
The situation immediately appeared critical: in the early afternoon, a hotel was evacuated as a precaution, while the fire was getting dangerously close to the Serrara Fontana viewpoint.
This is the second alarm in less than 24 hours: yesterday evening, flames had already affected the Iesca area, not far from today's outbreak.
Complicated operations and aircraft in action
Five teams are working on site firefighters, including the Ischia detachment and reinforcements from Naples and Salerno. But the operations are proving extremely complex: rescuers must contend with a difficult topography, which makes access to the most inaccessible areas difficult, and with the winds that continue to fan the fire.
Given the extent of the firefront, air support was requested: in the early afternoon, several helicopters entered into action with targeted water drops. Shortly thereafter, two Canadair aircraft were dispatched to provide support, refueling in Maronti Bay.
Despite the massive deployment of resources, the situation remains worrying: the flames continue to spread and are now just a few hundred meters from homes. In some areas, thick smoke has made the air unbreathable, while residents watch the fire's advance with apprehension.
Concern among residents and tourists
The fire comes in the middle of August, the height of the tourist season, heightening fear among visitors and industry professionals. The evacuation of the hotel, while precautionary, is a sign of the delicate situation.
Local authorities, in close contact with civil defense and firefighters, are constantly monitoring the front's evolution. Meanwhile, work is underway to contain the blaze and protect homes and the most exposed areas.
The causes of the fire are not yet known, but arson has not been ruled out, as often happens in areas with dense and difficult-to-control vegetation.
