VVacations for families, loneliness and abandonment for pets. Summer continues to prove a difficult season for dogs, often left alone or neglected when packing becomes more important than their lives.

The last two cases, reported in Sant'Anastasia and Brusciano, tell similar stories: owners reported, animals found in desperate conditions, saved only thanks to the intervention of citizens and the Carabinieri.

In Sant'Anastasia the military intervened after a call from a citizen who had noticed a dog malnourished in a supermarket parking lot. A few minutes earlier, the owner, a 73-year-old retiree, had tried to run away, leaving the animal tied to a rope, without food or water.

When she noticed the commotion and realized the police were coming, the woman quickly brought the dog back into the house. It was no use: the officers arrived shortly afterward, finding the animal trapped in a cramped, suffocating space, in conditions incompatible with survival.

She was reported for mistreatment, fined €5, and ordered to immediately improve her dog's custody.

A few kilometers away, in Brusciano, the scene wasn't much different. A dog had been left on a house balcony for days, under the scorching sun, without shelter, water, or food. The neighbors raised the alarm, exasperated by the animal's yelping.

They arrived on site police from the local station, who located the owner: a 41-year-old man from Mariglianella. He was also reported. The animal, examined by local health authority veterinary staff, was temporarily placed with a family member.

These two incidents confirm a dramatic phenomenon: that of summer abandonment and abuse, which recurs punctually every year and which only the vigilance of citizens and the prompt intervention of law enforcement can, in part, curb.
