There, with skill and composure, they pulled off what could be called the heist of their lives: a million euro theft in Jewelry and precious.

But the two scammers' escape was short-lived. In recent days, the State Police—Bologna Flying Squad, Property Crimes Unit—arrested two Italian men, aged 39 and 30, on charges of aggravated theft by deception against an elderly person.

According to investigators' reconstruction, it all began with a meticulously staged set-up. Upon returning home, the victim was confronted by two men: one wearing a jacket with the word "Carabinieri" written on it.

They told her that her home had been robbed and that the alleged perpetrators had already been arrested. To complete the checks, they asked her to show any valuables, thus persuading her to open a vault where she kept her most precious jewelry. Then, in a lightning-fast move, the two men fled with a staggering haul. Only then did the woman realize she had been tricked.

The investigations and the turning point

Thanks to analysis of surveillance camera footage in the area, investigators were able to trace a large-engine motorcycle used by the scammers, with counterfeit license plates. Following the vehicles' tracks, police identified a rest area where two large campers were parked—one with Italian license plates and one with French license plates—attributable to two Sinti families residing between the provinces of Vercelli and Turin.

A crucial detail emerged: the two arrested men used motorhomes as mobile bases, traveling throughout Northern Italy. Inside, they transported motorcycles with which they scoured cities in search of vulnerable victims, mostly elderly people. The "hits" lasted for hours.

After the operations, the motorcycles were hidden away from the campers to avoid arousing suspicion. Only before leaving the area were the vehicles loaded onto board for travel to new destinations.

The arrest and the seized material

The circle closed a few days ago in the province of Rimini. The two were located aboard their campers and arrested. During the searches, police seized burglary tools, clothing consistent with that used in the robbery, cash, jewelry of dubious origin, and a high-powered motorcycle. Those arrested were transferred to the prisons of Rimini and Ravenna, where they are being held by the judiciary.

Elderly scams: a growing plague

The episode is just the latest sign of an increasingly widespread and alarming criminal phenomenon: the scams against the elderly. A heinous crime that preys on the trust and fragility of the most vulnerable people.

Law enforcement officials urge maximum caution and never to open the door to strangers, even if they're dressed as police officers, without first verifying their identity using official numbers. If in doubt, reporting the matter immediately can make the difference between falling victim or avoiding the trap.

In this specific case, the cold-blooded nature of the scammers, the choice of victim, the credible staging, and the exceptional loot make the case emblematic of a new, organized, and ruthless itinerant crime. But the state's response was also swift and effective.

It's truly incredible how some people can defraud the elderly. There should be more controls to protect vulnerable people from such situations. I hope these scammers are severely punished for their inhumane behavior.
