There are those who travel on the A2 for work, those who travel on holiday, and then there are those who use the rest areas as illegal dumps.

In recent weeks, the Carabinieri of the Solofra Company, together with the Forino Forestry Unit and at the request of the Avellino Prosecutor's Office, have declared war on these uncivilized people, catching six of them red-handed – literally.

Camera traps and surprise checks: the strategy that works

Between Montoro and Serino, especially at night, some drivers transformed rest areas into veritable landfills: black bags, bulky materials, and even hazardous waste were abandoned without hesitation.

But what they didn't know was that invisible eyes had been watching them for weeks: strategically placed camera traps to capture incriminating faces, license plates, and gestures.

"The images are unequivocal," investigative sources explain. The six people charged—caught red-handed while dumping everything from household waste to potentially toxic materials—now face hefty fines and criminal prosecution. Meanwhile, ANAS is already working to clean up and secure the affected areas.

It's not an isolated case: Irpinia says enough

The A2 operation is just the latest in a series of operations targeting waste dumping in the province. In recent months, the Carabinieri had already discovered piles of construction waste in Molinelle (a protected area), abandoned waste in the Manocalzati industrial area, and even a neglected monitoring station for the Sabato River.

In Monteforte Irpino, ARPAC's intervention was needed to classify mountains of rubbish found in the Breccelle area.

The operation is part of a broader plan, also discussed during a recent meeting at the Youth Center of the Diocese of Avellino . "The Prefecture, the Prosecutor's Office, and the Carabinieri have decided to increase the level of controls," confirmed an institutional source. "The goal is not just to issue fines, but to prevent crime: camera traps are just the beginning."

Meanwhile, the message is clear: in Irpinia, polluters will be increasingly hunted. And this time, it could be a midnight click that betrays them.

It's interesting to see how the Carabinieri are using technologies like camera traps to stop littering. I hope these measures can lead to real and lasting change in waste management.
