Avellino – A war arsenal hidden in an uninhabited house. This is what the Carabinieri discovered in Roccabascerana, in the hamlet of Squillani, during a territorial control operation.
Inside two trolleys, the officers found two submachine guns, seven semi-automatic pistols, three revolvers, a rifle, two shotguns, and thousands of rounds of ammunition of various calibers. The weapons, most with missing serial numbers or with their numbers erased, were found to be in perfect working order.
Weapons stolen between Naples and Rieti
Initial investigations revealed that part of the arsenal came from thefts that occurred in the provinces of Naples and Rieti. This detail opens the door to possible links to organized crime, although investigators are not ruling out any leads at this time.
Technical and ballistic tests will determine whether the rifles and pistols have previously been used in criminal acts. "In-depth investigations are underway," the Provincial Command announced, "to reconstruct the supply chain and identify who had physical access to these weapons."
The security alarm
The discovery of such a large quantity of weapons in a small town in Irpinia raises disturbing questions: who hid them, and for what purpose? The suspicion is that the abandoned house could have served as a safe haven for criminal gangs, far from the most heavily guarded areas.
The Avellino prosecutor's office is now coordinating the investigation to determine the arsenal's provenance and final destination. It has not been ruled out that the material could have been intended to supply clans operating between Campania and Lazio.
