A heartfelt appeal for Paolo Piccolo, the 25-year-old left in a coma after a violent beating in Bellizzi Irpino prison in October 2024. The appeal was launched by the Campania region's prisoners ' guarantor , Samuele Ciambriello, who calls for "immediate and decisive intervention" so that the young man can be transferred to an appropriate rehabilitation facility.
Piccolo, brutally attacked on the night of October 22nd, has since been in a permanent vegetative state and hospitalized at Moscati Hospital in Avellino. "To date," Ciambriello reports, "no healthcare facility in Campania or outside the region has been available to accept him for neuromotor rehabilitation. Bureaucratic delays are denying this boy his right to hope and life."
The judiciary has opened an investigation into the beating, involving dozens of defendants, charged with various counts of attempted murder aggravated by cruelty, kidnapping, and resisting arrest. The trial will resume on September 12, 2025, while the first three convictions have already been handed down through the summary trial.
"I thank the doctors and staff at Moscati who have worked so hard so far," Ciambriello added, "but now it's urgent that the health department and the relevant authorities find a high-intensity rehabilitation facility. We can't allow bureaucracy to leave Paolo without care."
It's truly sad that a young man like Paolo Piccolo is living in these conditions. It's crucial that the authorities do everything possible to find a suitable facility. Bureaucracy must not hinder his rehabilitation.
