A fully-fledged robbery was foiled by chance by two off-duty Carabinieri officers. It happened in Ercolano, near Villa Ruggiero, a historic Vesuvian residence currently undergoing restoration.
A 40-year-old man, Liberato Abbate, already known to law enforcement, was caught trying to leave a construction site on Via Doglie with recently stolen building materials.
Two soldiers, even though they were off duty, became suspicious of his behavior and stopped him in the street.
During the search, burglary tools and part of the stolen goods were found in the thief 's backpack . The materials were immediately returned to the company working on the restoration of the villa, a listed monument protected by the Fondazione Ente Ville Vesuviane. Abbate was arrested and taken to Poggioreale prison, pending a validation hearing.
