The autopsy, conducted yesterday by coroner Marina D'Aniello at Eboli Hospital, confirmed death by external mechanical asphyxiation: the victim was suffocated with cling film, sealed with duct tape, during a violent argument.
Tina, an accountant at a paint business, was found with bruises on her neck and wrists, evidence of a strenuous fight for survival. The autopsy revealed small wounds and evidence of a struggle, with Persico apparently immobilizing the woman before blocking her airway.
Samples were also taken from Tina Sgarbini's fingernails, searching for biological traces of the killer, and toxicology tests were conducted. It will take some time to obtain the complete results.
According to the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, which is coordinating the investigation, the motive is jealousy: Persico, a bricklayer, couldn't accept the end of their relationship, which ended a few months ago after nearly a decade. Tina, who was facing an incurable disease with great determination, had repeatedly reiterated her decision to end the relationship.
On the night between Friday and Saturday, the man reportedly went to the victim's apartment, possibly in an attempt to mend their relationship. The argument escalated into a lethal attack: Persico used cling film, found in the house, to cover Tina's face, sealing it with duct tape to prevent her from breathing. The woman died within minutes, unable to defend herself.

After the crime, Persico fled, leaving a letter for his mother in which he admitted he had "done something stupid." The man's worried family alerted the Carabinieri, who found Tina's body.
The manhunt lasted only a few hours: Persico was captured Saturday evening in San Pietro, not far from the crime scene, with obvious marks on his face, possibly the result of a suicide attempt or the victim's resistance. Before the preliminary investigations judge, the man confessed to the femicide: "It was me." The investigating judge confirmed the arrest, ordering his pre-trial detention in Fuorni prison on charges of aggravated homicide.
