Forio d'Ischia – A serious environmental disaster is rocking the island of Ischia. Near the Zaro area of Forio, just steps from the historic Villa La Colombaia, former residence of director Luchino Visconti, an illegal waste dump has been reported. Among the materials dumped are suspected to be asbestos, a highly toxic substance that poses a health and environmental hazard.
The discovery, which occurred near Isola Ecologia, sparked outrage among residents and associations, with Europa Verde leading the charge in calling for immediate action. The alarm was raised by Europa Verde Forio city councilor Mimmo Loffredo, who, after receiving reports from several residents, conducted an inspection and documented the seriousness of the situation.
“We are facing a criminal act in an area of great natural and cultural value,” Loffredo declared. “I have requested the urgent intervention of the Municipal police to secure the area, analyze the spilled materials, and review video surveillance footage to identify those responsible.
Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green-Left Alliance, also weighed in on the matter, calling the incident "yet another affront to a heritage that should be untouchable." Borrelli, vice president of the Parliamentary Ecomafia Commission, announced he will bring the case to the attention of the Ministry of the Environment, requesting an investigation into any systemic responsibilities.
"Environmental criminals operate with impunity. We need a tough response: identify the culprits, punish them severely, and make their names public," he added, emphasizing the importance of civic vigilance. "I thank Loffredo and the citizens who don't turn a blind eye. Now we need to proceed with the characterization of the waste and, if asbestos is confirmed, with immediate remediation."
The incident refocuses attention on the problem of illegal dumping on Ischia, an island that thrives on tourism and natural beauty, but is increasingly under attack from those who threaten its fragile environmental balance. Authorities are called upon to intervene quickly to protect an area of inestimable historical and landscape value.
