In Gragnano, a town in the province of Naples famous worldwide for its pasta, the Carabinieri have targeted another local "specialty": illegal gambling.
This morning, a joint operation between officers from the Gragnano station and agents from the Customs and Monopolies Agency led to a series of sweeping checks at public establishments in the city center. The goal? Breaking up the underground gambling network.
Bar under fire: 4 illegal video poker machines seized
The main target of the operation was a downtown bar, where inspectors discovered a small, illegal "casino" in full operation. Four unauthorized slot machine games were hidden among the coffee machines and liquor shelves, completely disconnected from the official computer network.
But that's not all. The military also found and seized a coin-exchange machine, a key tool for fueling illegal gambling. A well-oiled system, in short, that allowed rules and controls to be circumvented.
"Checks will continue": the promise of the police
The operation doesn't stop there. The Carabinieri have already announced that checks will intensify in the coming days, extending to other suspicious businesses. The goal is clear: to nip the illegal gambling phenomenon in the bud, which is often closely linked to money laundering and other illicit activities.
Gragnano, between pasta and gambling: a dangerous combination
While the city is famous for its historic pasta factories, illegal gambling threatens to tarnish its image. Law enforcement, however, has sent a clear message: anyone who wants to turn bars into gambling halls will face legal action.
Meanwhile, the owner of the inspected establishment now risks heavy administrative fines and, in the most serious cases, even criminal prosecution. Because, in Gragnano, while pasta is a source of pride, illegal gambling is a luxury no one can afford anymore.

I think controls are necessary, but we also need to be careful about honest bars that could be damaged by these operations. Not all bars are involved in gambling; some are simply meeting places.
I read the article and think it's important for the Carabinieri to monitor illegal gambling. Even though Gragnano is famous for its pasta, the problem of illegal gambling, which can cause problems, cannot be ignored.
