The latest chapter in this "black summer" comes from Teano, where the fire that broke out on August 16 at the Campania Energia company continues to cause concern. According to Arpa Campania, analyses updated to August 25 reveal airborne dioxin levels of 286 pg/Nm3 I-TEQ, dramatically higher than the reference limit of 0,15 pg/Nm3 I-TEQ set by the scientific community.
The fire, which devastated the industrial structure, is now in a "diffusion" phase, with small outbreaks and embers generating dense, low-altitude smoke, unlike the initial phases in which the chimney effect dispersed pollutants upwards.
To monitor the situation, ARPA installed a new high-volume sampler near the site, intensifying inspections, also in light of weather and climate conditions. The data, supported by modeling from the Regional Food Safety Observatory (ORSA), confirms a critical situation, with dioxin concentrations consistent with the proximity to the still-active outbreak.
The environmental agency will continue monitoring the air in the coming days and is conducting sampling of agricultural soils, potentially contaminated by fallout from pollutants.
