Salerno – A night of terror shook Villammare, a hamlet of Vibonati, where a vast fire destroyed three wooden houses along State Road 18.
The fire, which broke out around one in the morning, made residents fear the worst, due to the risk that the flames would spread to homes and a nearby shopping centre.
The race against time to avoid the explosion
The emergency was made even more critical by the presence of numerous gas cylinders in the affected and adjacent homes. The risk of explosion was real and imminent, turning the rescue operations into a race against time.
The Carabinieri of the Sapri Mobile Radio Unit and the local police responded immediately to the scene . Firefighters from the Sala Consilina detachment, supported by a fire truck from Salerno, fought for hours to contain the blaze, which was particularly complex due to its extent.
A hypothesis on the causes and the final outcome
According to initial reconstructions, the fire may have been started accidentally, perhaps by an unextinguished cigarette, but the cause remains unclear. The area was secured only after long and painstaking work by rescuers.
Fortunately, despite the fear, no injuries were reported. The fire caused only material damage, but it left a profound mark on the community, which watched helplessly as a potential disaster unfolded.

The Villammare fire was a truly terrible event, and it's not talked about enough. Residents were scared, and rightly so. We hope nothing similar happens in the future, but the causes must be clarified for safety's sake.
