Montemiletto – A heart attack struck down Pasquale Dello Iacono, 74, a farmer from Irpinia, after a day of battling flames. He died last night at his country home, between the Sant'Eusebio and Bosco districts, exhausted from the effort to save his land from yet another arson attack.
A few hours earlier, alongside firefighters and volunteers, he had fought to prevent the fire from devouring his 130 olive trees. But his heart failed him.
The man who allegedly set the fire, a 58-year-old from Montefalcione, was arrested by the Carabinieri . Security cameras reportedly captured him preparing incendiary material yesterday afternoon, shortly before the fire broke out. He is now under house arrest, awaiting a validation hearing.
Dello Iacono, after hours of exhausting attempts to contain the fire, returned home exhausted. Then, he collapsed. His family and emergency medical staff were unable to do anything. His already weakened heart gave out.
The fires have devastated hectares of forest and destroyed dozens of olive trees, a lifetime's heritage. The community is in shock. The funeral will be held tomorrow, but the question remains: how many more tragedies will it take to stop this environmental massacre?
