Naples – Violence in the historic center: a young man was attacked and his cell phone stolen. Another incident of violence occurred this morning, shortly before 5:00 a.m., in Piazza Dante.
A 23-year-old Tunisian man, an illegal immigrant in Italy and already known to law enforcement, was attacked by a group of unknown assailants while he was in the famous square. According to initial reports, still being examined by investigators, the attackers attempted to steal his cell phone, spraying pepper spray in his eyes and hitting him in the side with a blunt object, likely to overpower him.
First the pepper spray and then the stabbing
Carabinieri from the Central Company responded promptly, going to Pellegrini Hospital, where the young man was taken for medical treatment. After receiving treatment, the victim was discharged with a 10-day prognosis for his injuries.
The Carabinieri of the San Giuseppe Station are investigating the case, working to identify the perpetrators of the attack and clarify the exact dynamics of the events.
An episode that puts the spotlight back on safety in the city center
The attack, which occurred in Piazza Dante, one of Naples' busiest and most iconic squares, has rekindled residents' concerns about safety in the historic center, especially at night. Piazza Dante, known for its lively atmosphere and as a gathering place for young people and tourists, is no stranger to petty crime, but the use of pepper spray and a blunt weapon marks a worrying escalation in violence.
The Carabinieri's investigation is focusing on gathering witness statements and analyzing any images from surveillance cameras in the area, which may have captured the incident.
At this time, no details have emerged about the attackers, described by the victim as "unknown." Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of an isolated robbery attempt, but are also evaluating the possibility of a more complex attack, given the context and the status of the young man involved.
A call for vigilance and collaboration
This incident, which follows other cases of violence in the city, highlights the need to strengthen law enforcement presence in sensitive areas and promote greater collaboration between citizens and authorities to prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, the young Tunisian's 10-day sentence serves as a reminder of the gravity of the incident, while Naples is grappling with how to ensure safety in one of its most iconic landmarks. The investigation continues apace, aiming to bring those responsible to justice and restore peace to the community.
