Naples. Fish floating, murky water, and a nauseating odor. This is the scene faced by residents of San Giovanni a Teduccio, on the stretch of coast between Vigliena and Pietrarsa.
The phenomenon, which has raised a wave of concern and alarm, has seen a large number of lifeless grey mullets floating in the stretch of sea, including the one officially designated for swimming.
The images, posted on social media by residents, went viral, strikingly contrasting with Mayor Gaetano Manfredi's announcement, which just hours earlier had published a photo celebrating the start of environmental cleanup work on the former Corradini beach. This coincidence fueled residents' discontent and mistrust.
Doubts about bathing suitability and ongoing investigations
The eastern part of Naples has historically been considered one of the most polluted coastal areas in Campania. In fact, along nearly a kilometer of coastline, only a small stretch is officially suitable for swimming, but residents report that actual access is even more limited.
Most of the coastline has been closed for years due to untreated sewage and high bacterial counts, a situation also confirmed by Arpac and Legambiente.
The presence of dead fish right in the "clean" stretch has further shaken spirits. "It's an increasingly disturbing phenomenon," denounced Enzo Morreale, of the neighborhood civic committee. “A clear and transparent investigation is needed to understand whether there are risks to public health.” The reports also reached the Port Authority of Naples, and ARPAC promptly began investigations to determine the causes of the deaths.
For environmental remediation, the Municipality, the Region, and the Ministry of the Environment have allocated 35 million euros, an investment that is part of the plan to remediate sites of national interest.
Despite funding and interventions, public confidence remains low, and pollution concerns continue to grow. "We want to know what's happening," residents ask, waiting for clear and definitive answers.
