Naples – A day of extraordinary checks yesterday in the area of Piazza Mancini and Porta Nolana, one of the city's most sensitive areas for trafficking and illegal commercial activity. State Police officers from the Vicaria-Mercato, Arenella, Pianura, and San Giovanni-Barra police stations were deployed, supported by the Guardia di Finanza and staff from the Naples Central Health Authority (ASL Napoli 1 Centro).
The operation's findings speak for themselves: 86 people identified, 24 vehicles inspected, and two traffic violations issued. However, irregularities were especially evident in the commercial sector. Six businesses were inspected: some owners were immediately subject to time-barred orders following administrative violations , with two fines totaling €2.000.
Not only that. During inspections, operators seized 35 kilos of poorly preserved food products, deemed potentially hazardous to consumer health. Two restaurants were temporarily closed due to serious hygiene and sanitation deficiencies.
The service is part of a monitoring plan for the city's most sensitive areas, where legitimate and illegal trading often intertwine. Investigators explain that this monitoring activity will continue in the coming days to ensure greater safety for residents and consumer protection.
The operation appears to have been well-organized, but I wonder if it's enough to just check the shops and not also the people selling illegally on the streets. A broader strategy is needed to address these problems.
