Rome – The wave of scandals over the theft and non-consensual publication of images of women on the Web.
After /// Following the Facebook group "My Wife," a new, potentially larger and more dangerous earthquake is hitting the internet: this time, even the highest officials in the state are being targeted by image thieves, from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein, in a vortex of sexualization and digital violence centered on the hardcore forum Phica.eu.
The shocking discovery came yesterday afternoon, August 27, on the social media of several Democratic Party members. The first to raise the alarm were MEP Alessandra Moretti and Lazio regional councilor Valeria Campagna, who reported finding their photos stolen and published on the site without their consent.
They were joined almost immediately by former parliamentarian Alessia Morani and MP Lia Quartapelle.
"I have decided to react by filing a complaint, not only for myself but, above all, for all the other women victims of this violence," Quartapelle announced in a statement, summarizing the state of mind of a female political class under attack.
Images stolen from everyday life—a selfie, a photo on the beach, a moment of ordinary life—are torn from their context, sexualized, and thrown to a community of users who comment on them with "sexist and vulgar tones," according to the complaints.
The protest's standard-bearer is Roberta Mori, national spokesperson for the Democratic Women's Conference, who expressed her "closeness to the many women who find themselves in a hellish circle of attacks on their reputation and honor."
And he confirms: the list of victims also includes Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the latter already the target of inappropriate comments in the past.
But the phenomenon, as it turns out, is not politically charged. It involves "members of other parties and many prominent women," all of whom have been transformed into objects without their consent. Support has come from across the board from the Green and Left Alliance and Italia Viva, with Senator Raffaella Paita relaunching her proposal for an emergency procedure to block websites that publish "stolen" photos.
