Milan – A Brianza-based entrepreneur found himself the victim of sophisticated identity theft: using his falsified and unscrupulous personal information, a 73-year-old resident of the province of Naples purchased a luxury car and then resold it, pocketing the profit.

The man, already known to law enforcement for a criminal record, was reported by the Carabinieri of Mariano Comense for impersonation and fraudulent purchase of a vehicle.

The scam in a few days

According to the investigation, the scheme was carried out in less than a week. On May 7, 2025, the scammer opened an online bank account in the name of the Brianza businessman.

A few days later, between May 9 and 12, he showed up at a dealership in Parma as if he were the victim, purchasing an Audi A3 worth €46.383 using financing from Volkswagen Financial Service.

On May 15th, he picked up the car and then almost immediately resold it to a third party for €26.000. Only on May 19th did the businessman, having discovered the scam, file a complaint.

The investigation and identification

Thanks to the SARI facial recognition system used by the Carabinieri, the pensioner's identity was also confirmed by the dealership employee who had served him. Investigators are now investigating the possible presence of accomplices and channels for receiving stolen goods.

The alarm about online scams

The case highlights an increasingly widespread phenomenon: digital identity theft. Using counterfeit documents and online procedures, criminals can obtain loans, open bank accounts, and purchase valuable goods, leaving victims with serious financial and legal losses.

Law enforcement officials remind people of the importance of protecting their personal data, carefully checking bank transactions, and promptly reporting any anomalies. Cyber scams affect everyone: neither private citizens nor entrepreneurs.
