A tacit agreement between a cashier and a customer to avoid paying for groceries resulted in an arrest in flagrante delicto.

This is what happened yesterday afternoon in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, where the Carabinieri of the local station arrested two 39-year-old women, one resident of Casapulla and the other of Curti, accused of aggravated theft.

The deal at the checkout

According to investigators' reconstruction, the conspiracy would have taken place directly at the checkout barrier: the cashier , on duty at the supermarket, would have deliberately omitted to scan several food items, thus allowing her friend to bypass the checkout line without paying the full amount due.

The "phantom expense" amounted to €255,38, a figure that the military defines as "far from marginal" for the dynamics of a local supermarket.

The intervention of the police

The plan, however, did not escape internal controls and surveillance. Once the anomalous behavior was reported, Carabinieri from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere station responded to the scene, arresting the two women shortly after they had passed the checkout. Both were arrested red-handed.

Under house arrest pending trial

After the formal procedures were completed, the two 39-year-olds were taken to their respective homes, where they are now under house arrest. The Prosecutor's Office has ordered a summary hearing against them, which will be held in the next few hours before a judge of the San Marino court.

The incident caused a stir not only because of the value of the stolen goods, but also because one of the people involved was an employee of the store, who was supposed to ensure fairness and supervision.
