Teano – The plan of four specialized criminals, all from the Neapolitan hinterland, was unsuccessful. Yesterday afternoon, they carried out a robbery at a telephone repeater in Teano Scalo, only to be arrested immediately afterwards.
Their loot, eight heavy storage batteries worth over five thousand euros, was recovered a few hours after the robbery thanks to the intuition and composure of a Carabinieri officer who, by pure chance, happened to be in the wrong place... for them.
The alarm was raised by an off-duty policeman
The story begins along Via Pontone, where a Carabinieri officer, off duty and in plain clothes, is driving by. He notices a white Fiat 500 suspiciously parked under a disused railway viaduct, its engine running.
Not far away, the action is in full swing: the four have just forced the fence and padlocks of a Vodafone and TIM repeater tower and are loading the precious batteries into their car. The corporal doesn't hesitate: he identifies himself and orders a halt. The thieves' response, however, isn't the best: after threatening him, they climb into the Fiat 500 and make a reckless escape towards Capua.
Stuck on the Casilina after a long chase
But the Carabinieri officer didn't lose sight of them for a moment and, in the meantime, alerted the Capua Operations Center. A deployment of forces was immediately launched: patrols from the Operations and Radiomobile Unit and those from the Calvi Risorta and Pignataro Maggiore stations went into action.
While the officer continues his daring pursuit, colleagues from the Pignataro station, coordinated by telephone, set up a roadblock on the Casilina highway. The white car is intercepted and safely stopped.
Inside, the loot was still there: eight batteries worth €5000. The four men, aged between 35 and 49, three of whom had previous similar convictions, were searched and immediately arrested.
They, now charged with aggravated theft and resisting a public officer, have been placed under house arrest pending trial. The car and the stolen goods have been seized. A trip that ended badly, very badly.
