Torre Annunziata – The long and heated dispute between Father Francesco Balzano and the Bishop of Nola, Msgr. Francesco Marino, has become a full-blown legal case.
After months of underground tensions and public statements, the rift erupted in the courts: the Orthodox priest filed a complaint against the Catholic prelate, accusing him of defamation via the internet and demanding 50 euros in compensation for the moral damages he suffered.
At the heart of the affair is an official statement released by the Diocese of Nola on July 28, in which Archbishop Marino warned the faithful against Balzano's "illegitimate" celebrations, calling him—and others—illegitimately ordained and urging Catholics not to participate in what the bishop called "vaunted liturgies."
