Torre del Greco – A tall, rust-eaten iron lamppost collapsed early yesterday afternoon along Via Nazionale in Torre del Greco, a few steps from the old, abandoned gas station.
The pole, which crashed into the bus stop at number 24, was blocked by a crumbling advertising sign and piles of rubbish, narrowly averting tragedy. "It's a miracle there wasn't a death," says Vincenzo, a longtime local shopkeeper, still shaken.
"That pole was a disaster waiting to happen, like everything else around here." The accident brought to light the chronic decay of Via Nazionale, a historic thoroughfare connecting Torre del Greco to the Torre Annunziata courthouse, which had been reduced to a symbol of abandonment.
Ruined roads, uneven sidewalks, overgrown weeds, dog waste, and flowerbeds turned into landfills: the picture residents describe is pitiless. "This city isn't for us, nor for tourists," vented Anna, a passerby who witnessed the collapse.
"Just look at the Sant'Antonio roundabout or the torn-down benches in front of the church to understand the state we're in." Local police officers responded to the scene, cordoning off the area to ensure safety, followed by Enel technicians, called in to restore the power supply that had been interrupted by the collapse.
But the incident, yet another on a street plagued by accidents, including fatal ones, has rekindled residents' anger at a municipal administration accused of inaction. "We're abandoned," laments another resident.
"Despite the complaints and incidents, there's no concrete action in sight to restore this area." Via Nazionale, once the pride of Torre del Greco due to its commercial importance and proximity to historic sites, is now in dire condition.
Road damage, lack of urban decor, and chaotic traffic pose a constant risk to public safety, as demonstrated by the collapse of the pole. The former gas station, now in ruins, is just one of the many symbols of degradation that discourages residents and tourists, in a city struggling to valorize its heritage.
Local authorities have not yet released an official statement on the accident, but residents are demanding urgent responses: from infrastructure maintenance to waste removal, to a comprehensive redevelopment plan. Meanwhile, the collapsed area remains under observation, while the community wonders how much longer it will take to see Via Nazionale restored to its former glory.
"We can't live with the fear that the next pole will fall on someone's head," Vincenzo concludes. In Torre del Greco, patience seems to be running out.
