Analysis of video surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts gathered on-site will clarify the causes of this morning's tragic accident on the A1 motorway, northbound between the Arezzo and Valdarno toll booths, near Levanella.

A violent crash involving a Misericordia ambulance in Terranuova Bracciolini, crushed between two heavy vehicles, resulted in a tragic death toll: three people died and fifteen others were injured.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m., effectively paralyzing highway traffic for hours. The ambulance, transporting a patient from the San Donato Hospital in Arezzo to Gruccia, was moving slowly in a queue, likely due to heavy traffic, when it was hit with extreme force by a tractor-trailer. The impact pushed the ambulance into the truck in front, crushing it completely.

The ambulance was carrying two healthcare workers and a patient: Gianni Trappolini, 56, Giulia Santoni, 23, and Franco Lovari, a 75-year-old retiree. All residents of Valdarno. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done for them: they died instantly.

The rescue effort was swift and impressive. Numerous 118 ambulances, firefighter teams from Arezzo, Florence, and Valdarno, and even a dozen men from Turin, returning from Rome where they had served at the Jubilee of Youth, responded to the scene. Traffic police and Autostrade per l'Italia staff were also present.

The northbound carriageway, heading towards Milan, was closed for approximately eight hours to allow for rescue operations, the removal of the vehicles involved, and technical inspections. Southbound traffic resumed around 15:30 PM.

The consequences for traffic were severe: kilometers of tailbacks in both directions and traffic diverted onto ordinary roads, with serious repercussions also in the Valdarno and Siena areas.

In addition toambulance Along with the two trucks, three cars (one with a trailer) and a bus were also involved, the latter only slightly. Among the injured, one is in serious condition: the 57-year-old driver of the truck that hit the ambulance. He was transported by air ambulance to the Careggi hospital in Florence with a red-coded injury. Four other injuries are classified as yellow-coded, and ten are classified as green-coded.

The cause of the crash is currently being investigated by the Highway Patrol, who have acquired surveillance camera footage and are interviewing witnesses. The driver of the semi-trailer will undergo alcohol and drug tests, as is standard practice. The black boxes of the trucks involved will also be examined to accurately reconstruct the accident and its dynamics.

The shocked rescuers of the 118 emergency services and all the medical personnel. Simone Nocentini, head of the Arezzo 118 emergency service, couldn't hold back his tears: "A tragedy unheard of in so many years." Luca Pancioni, disaster manager at the San Donato hospital, also praised the work done, thanking the firefighters and emergency workers who responded, and expressing his appreciation for the director of the Arezzo Highway Police, Saverio Cialdea: "An incredible job, both operationally and personally."

According to initial hypotheses, the collision could have been caused by distraction, microsleep, the truck driver becoming ill, or a technical failure. An autopsy on the victims' bodies will be scheduled in the coming hours.

Today's accident is the second fatal accident in just a few days on the Tuscan motorway network. On July 15, in the Barberino del Mugello base tunnel, five people—including a four-year-old girl—lost their lives after their Fiat Panda, stopped in its lane due to a breakdown, was hit by a truck.
