Vico Equense – A serious act of incivility has rocked the community of Vico Equense, where a local couple in their forties damaged the façade of the historic Cathedral of the Santissima Annunziata, a 14th-century architectural gem overlooking the sea and considered one of the most beautiful churches in Italy.
What was supposed to be a joyful moment, their civil wedding , turned into a news story due to a reckless act. Yesterday morning, after the ceremony at the Town Hall, the newlyweds reached the evocative forecourt of the former cathedral for the customary photos and videos.
Here, to create a dramatic effect, pyrotechnic smoke bombs were lit. However, the smoke and splashes of paint left visible marks on the building's façade, damaging a property of inestimable historical and cultural value.
Thanks to video surveillance footage, Vico Equense municipal police officers quickly identified the perpetrators, tracking them to a hotel in the city. The couple has been reported and will face charges of dangerous explosion and damage to a historic or artistic property.
The parish priest of the Church of Saints Cyrus and John, who manages the former cathedral, will assess the damage and request compensation.
