Naples – Piazza Di Vittorio, close to the airport Capodichino, is changing face. After years of neglect and decay, an extraordinary cleanup operation began this morning, involving Asia vehicles, local police patrols, and social services workers.
Since the early hours of the morning, bobcats and street cleaners have been working tirelessly to clear the area of waste and bulky materials. In just a few hours, approximately 20 tons of garbage were removed, the result of long-standing accumulations and illegal micro-dumps.
A dozen Asia vehicles provided washing, weed control, and sweeping, while three municipal patrols provided security and support for the operations.

The intervention is part of the activities of the task force led by Ciro Turiello, established by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi to restore the city's public spaces. The cleanup was carried out in collaboration with the Local Police, Parks and Gardens, and Social Policies departments, as well as the Municipal Police's Environmental and Social Emergencies Investigation Unit (IAES).
Not just waste: Piazza Di Vittorio, a long-time refuge for the homeless, has also been the focus of a social outreach program. The operational units have offered support and assistance to those who have lived in the area, seeking alternatives to the makeshift camps that had contributed to the area's degradation over time.
The Municipality announces that the cleanup will not be a one-off project. In the coming days, further recovery and redevelopment efforts will follow to restore dignity and livability to a site that, due to its strategic location on the outskirts of the city and close to the airport, represents a calling card for Naples.

It's important that the cleanup operation has been completed, but I believe more time and effort is needed to restore an area like this, which has been abandoned for so long. We hope for future interventions.
