Rome – State Police raided the heart of the capital: 14 pickpockets, true masters of theft, were arrested on lines A and B of the Roman metro.

The criminals, caught red-handed or immediately after their robberies, operated with a tried and tested strategy, taking advantage of the chaos of rush hour and the crowds at the busiest stations to rob unsuspecting passengers.

The officers of the Polmetro unit, specialized in combating underground crimes, dismantled a network of professional pickpockets who operated with surgical precision.

The thieves, often organized in pairs or small groups, divided roles: one distracted the victim with seemingly random movements or acted as lookout, while the other deftly opened bags and backpacks to steal wallets, phones, and other valuables.

A emblematic episode occurred at the Eur Magliana station, where officers witnessed a robbery involving an elderly person live.

Thanks to surveillance camera monitoring, the police intercepted two accomplices who, with quick nods of understanding, put their plan into action.

One of the thieves attempted to get rid of the stolen wallet by throwing it onto the tracks, but the stolen goods were recovered and returned to the owner. The two were arrested on charges of aggravated theft. Another crucial intervention occurred on the B line, at the Colosseo stop.

Here, a 40-year-old Romanian man was caught casually moving between convoys, trying to spot his prey. After a check, officers discovered that he had a prison warrant pending for similar crimes.

Video surveillance is essential in stations

The support of the station's video surveillance system was crucial in these interventions, allowing the perpetrators to be identified before they could escape. The images captured the pickpockets' suspicious movements, allowing officers to intervene promptly.

The operation, coordinated by the Rome Police Headquarters, is just the latest in a series of actions aimed at combating predatory crimes in the capital's subways. The officers of the Polmetro unit, working in synergy with ATAC personnel, will continue their prevention and repression work, maintaining high vigilance to ensure the safety of citizens.
