Salerno - A major operation this morning at the Salerno Prison. A massive raid , conducted by specialized units and coordinated by the prison's top brass, led to the discovery of a large haul of illicit materials.
Around 30 cell phones, including smartphones, handsets, and tablets, were seized from the inmates, as well as a significant quantity of narcotics, mainly hashish and cocaine.
The news, confirmed by Marianna Argenio, deputy regional secretary of the SAPPE for Campania, highlights a troubling situation within prisons. The operation involved special teams from other facilities in the region, demonstrating the gravity and complexity of the phenomenon.
The discovery of these devices represents a concrete threat to internal security and the fight against organized crime. The use of cell phones allows inmates to maintain contact with the outside world, allowing them to continue to conduct illicit trafficking and commit crimes even from within prison walls.
Today's operation comes amid growing concern. Already in 2022, an investigation by the National Anti-Mafia and Counterterrorism Directorate reported a worrying spread of these tools. Today's search confirms a worrying growing trend, necessitating intensified controls and investigations.
In a statement, the Sappe union emphasized the crucial role of the Penitentiary Police: "The staff of the Salerno Prison, despite a thousand challenges, continues to work every day with dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice, representing a fundamental bulwark in the management of safety and legality."
It should be remembered that, since 2020, the illegal possession of communication devices by prisoners is no longer just a disciplinary sanction but has become a criminal offense, underscoring the gravity of a phenomenon that the authorities are determined to stamp out.
