The bullet was delivered into the hands of Father Maurizio Patriciello, during a children's mass at Caivano's Parco Verde. A sensational and unprecedented act in the area's crime chronicles, it raises disturbing questions: was it an isolated act by a frail man, or a carefully crafted message from those who, behind the scenes, continue to wield the Camorra's power?
The gesture and the arrest
The protagonist of the story is Vittorio De Luca, 75, father-in-law of Domenico Ciccarelli , leader of the clan that bears his name. On Sunday morning, during the service at the Church of San Paolo Apostolo, De Luca lined up to receive communion. Instead of the host, he handed the parish priest a package: inside, wrapped in a sheet of newspaper, was a 9x21 caliber bullet.
A dramatic act, carried out before the eyes of the faithful and children, was interrupted only by the intervention of journalist Marilena Natale, who was present in the church under escort due to threats from the Casalesi.
It was she who snatched the package from the priest and handed it to the security men. "Who sent you?" she asked the 75-year-old. The answer: "I can't tell you, or they'll kill me."
Taken to the police station and interrogated at length, De Luca was arrested on charges of aggravated stalking using mafia methods. It wasn't the first time he had targeted Don Patriciello: last year he had already threatened him with a knife.
The State's reaction
The gesture did not go unnoticed by the Ministry of the Interior. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi telephoned Don Patriciello, expressing his solidarity and announcing a reinforcement of his security detail. A security committee is scheduled to meet in Naples in the coming hours, while the deployment of additional police forces to Parco Verde, a neighborhood marked by decades of degradation and criminal rule, is being considered.
The shadow of the Camorra
The nature of the act remains a mystery. Don Maurizio Patriciello doesn't hide his fears: "I hope there's no hidden agenda. The situation at Parco Verde has been murky these days. After the latest arrests of the Ciccarelli clan, a power vacuum has been created that's destabilizing the entire neighborhood."
The incident occurred against a backdrop of intense tension. The evening before the attack, a "stesa" had sown fear: a dozen armed men had fired numerous shots in the street. A few hours later, De Luca showed up at the church. "I asked him what had happened," the parish priest recounted, "and he replied: 'They won't do anything to me, I've been declared incompetent.'" These words made me think he was being used as a pawn, because it wouldn't have any legal consequences.
The voice of the parish priest
Don Patriciello, a symbol of civil resistance against the mafia, continued to celebrate Mass despite the intimidation. But he doesn't hide his bitterness: "I feel sorry for Vittorio; I've known him for many years. I'm sorry he did it during the children's communion: it was a blasphemous act. They should leave the Mass to us; that's untouchable."
The priest also emphasizes the area's loneliness: "For more than twenty years, I've been asking governments to intervene. Ministers and politicians have come, they've promised, but the results are there for all to see. Parco Verde remains a place marked by the original sin of evil: thousands of people crowded together in buildings with no future."
A signal not to be underestimated
The bullet delivered to the church represents a quantum leap in intimidation: not a clandestine gesture, but a public act, charged with symbols, carried out in front of the faithful and children. It will now be crucial for investigators to establish whether De Luca acted on his own initiative or whether he was being supported by the clans, ready to reassert their presence in a territory where the state is still struggling to establish itself.
Meanwhile, Don Patriciello isn't backing down: "I'm fine, but it was a painful act. It hurt even more because it happened in front of the children, who are our future. A future that here at Parco Verde always seems a bit uncertain."

What happened in the church is truly strange. It's unclear whether Vittorio De Luca had a real message to deliver or was just a confused man. The situation at Parco Verde is complicated and frightening for everyone.
