PALERMO — The first, final verdict has been reached in the case of sexual assault that occurred on the night of July 16-17, 2019, at Ciro Grillo's Porto Cervo villa: the Court convicted all four defendants of gang rape. Ciro Grillo, Edoardo Capitta, and Vittorio Lauria were sentenced to eight years in prison each, while Francesco Corsiglia was sentenced to six and a half years.
The affair began that summer evening, when two 19-year-old girls—referred to in court by the formal names "Silvia" and "Roberta"—went out to a nightclub in Porto Cervo and were then invited to the villa where they spent the night. According to the prosecutor's reconstruction, one of the two girls was later the victim of abuse. From the outset, the defendants denied the charges, maintaining that the sexual relations were consensual. Furthermore, photos and videos of the second girl, asleep, were allegedly sent from the same residence, which contributed to the charges against the four.
During the trial, held before the Tempio Pausania Court and personally presided over by Prosecutor Gregorio Capasso, the prosecution emphasized the inconsistencies and contradictions in the versions provided by the defendants, while instead highlighting the consistency of the victim's statements. "The defendants have proven unreliable," the prosecutor said in his closing arguments, "they have adapted their versions as the investigation progressed; the girl, however, has maintained a consistent narrative." For the prosecution, the chronological sequence of events as recounted by the victim is key to understanding the case.
The victim's testimony, partially given behind a partition, was extremely harsh: she described being unable to move, having difficulty reacting, and subsequent episodes of profound psychological distress, including self-harm. In court, she also described episodes of being forced to drink alcohol. "After the gang rape, I no longer wanted to live," she said, recalling a period when she even considered taking her own life.
The defense reiterated their clients' innocence, with spontaneous statements invoking good faith and opposition to any abuse. "None of us has ever taken advantage of anyone," Ciro Grillo, among others, stated in court. Despite the defense's counterarguments, the court found the evidence to support a conviction.
None of the defendants were present in court when the verdict was read; even the victim, although she wanted to be present, attended the final stages at the request of her lawyer for protection reasons. The ruling represents an important conclusion to a trial that received widespread media coverage and raised sensitive criminal and social issues, from alcohol to the effectiveness of consent to the dynamics of power and vulnerability in group situations.
