RIO DE JANEIRO – From the Champions League stage to the risk of ending up in jail: the story of Douglas Costa, former winger of Juventus, Bayern Munich, and the Brazilian national team, now appears to be in a complete collapse. A Porto Alegre court has ordered his arrest for unpaid child support debts totaling approximately 493 reais, nearly $93.
The decision was signed by Judge Sonali da Cruz Zluhan of the Sixth Family Court, who sentenced the player to 30 days' detention with the possibility of immediate arrest by any authority at any time. This represents a serious stain on the 35-year-old, whose international career had already been on the rocks in recent years.
Sydney FC, his last club in Australia, announced yesterday the mutual termination of his contract, citing "ongoing legal and personal issues" the player is facing in Brazil. This is not the first time that Douglas Costa he ends up in the crosshairs of justice: already in 2023, when he was playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy, a Brazilian court had issued a detention order for the same reasons.
