Naples – More fear and bloodshed in Fuorigrotta. A little over a year after the tragic death of Rita Granata , the student struck and killed on the crosswalk on Via Leopardi, a new accident has brought tensions back among neighborhood residents.

Late yesterday evening, a 79-year-old man was struck by two young men riding a scooter. Witnesses reported that, after the impact, the young men fled without providing assistance. The victim, rushed to San Paolo Hospital, suffered a broken leg but, fortunately, was released this morning.

Citizens' complaints

The case was reported by a resident to Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli , who has long campaigned against road violence. "The current Highway Code is absolutely inadequate," Borrelli declared. "It strips local authorities of their power and allows new drivers to drive fast cars, as if they were handing them a loaded gun."

The MP also recalled the tragedy in Sarno, where a few days ago 19-year-old Giuseppe Marchese lost his life in an accident that has left a 27-year-old woman driving a Fiat 500X under investigation for road homicide.

The requests for Via Leopardi

Residents of Fuorigrotta, shocked by yet another incident, are once again calling for urgent action to secure Via Leopardi and other at-risk roads in the area. Specifically:
Installation of speed bumps to reduce vehicle speed;
Resurfacing and improving visibility of pedestrian crossings;
Law enforcement is cracking down on those who drive without rules.

The appeal to politics

"I will continue to advocate for citizens' concerns," Borrelli concluded, "by submitting an urgent question and calling for a concrete road safety plan. The hope is that tragedies like Rita Granata's and yesterday's accident will not go unresolved, but will push institutions to act immediately to protect people's lives."

I also believe that something concrete needs to be done for pedestrian safety. Citizen complaints aren't enough; we need effective measures to protect all of us from future accidents.

I've noticed that the roads are often in poor condition and the lines are difficult to see. The authorities need to be more vigilant to avoid these dangerous situations, especially in neighborhoods like Fuorigrotta.

It's sad to see such serious accidents. Young people should be more responsible and consider the consequences of their actions. Road safety is an important issue and must be addressed urgently.
