Marcianise – A workplace massacre has rocked Campania. Three people were killed and two others were injured following a massive explosion yesterday morning inside the Ecopartenope waste disposal company in Marcianise, near Caserta.
Among the victims was the company owner, who was working alongside his employees on maintenance work on a silo for storing used oil.
According to initial reports, a spark on the upper floor of the plant triggered the explosion. The powerful blast was heard for kilometers and also caused damage to several nearby businesses.
The bodies of the three workers were torn apart and thrown several meters away. Multiple firefighters and State Police patrols responded to the scene.
Investigators noted that the same silo had previously been closed due to irregularities and miasma. The area has now been secured, and investigations are underway to determine the causes and responsibilities for the tragedy.
“Not a fatality but a system that does not guarantee safety”
The unions' reactions were harsh. The CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) of Caserta, Naples, and Campania called it "yet another intolerable tragedy," emphasizing that "this is not a matter of fate, but rather the failure of a business system that continues to fail to guarantee safety." For the UIL confederal secretary, Ivana Veronese, every workplace casualty represents "a defeat for the state and its institutions."
The union representative denounced "years of precariousness, pirated contracts, cheap maintenance, and insufficient controls" and relaunched the call for a special national plan for workplace safety.
The mayor of Marcianise , Antonio Trombetta, announced a day of mourning: "This is the most serious tragedy in our city's history. We need to engage in profound reflection, because these tragedies are unacceptable in a civilized society. Prevention is what's needed, not post-mortem mourning."
This workplace massacre is truly tragic. I can't believe that so many irregularities occurred in a company and that nothing was done to ensure worker safety. Action must be taken immediately.
