Naples – A scene straight out of a horror movie, not a scene from a neighborhood in a major European city. At the hour of the night when Fuorigrotta should be sleeping, a massive brawl erupts in front of the Diego Armando Maradona stadium, involving dozens of young people, improper weapons, shouting, and roaring engines.

The episode, captured on multiple videos by exasperated residents, is only the latest chapter in a long trail of degradation and lawlessness that transforms the area's nights into an open-air nightmare.

The videos, sent to Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, capture the climax of an ordinary night of madness: a pack of young people violently clashing, while motorcycles whizz by and music blare in the background. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

As locals tell it, nights in Fuorigrotta are a constant cycle of illegal outrages: young people on scooters doing wheelies, even five of them without helmets, the roar of modified exhausts, wild rides, and gatherings that degenerate into petty crime.

Just a few days ago, a man was savagely beaten before the eyes of his mother and youngest daughter. His crime? Stopping to help a boy who fell from a scooter after a sudden stop. An act of civility punished with violence, a symbol of a degradation that knows no bounds.

The political denunciation: "Immediately an iron fist"

The alarm was raised by MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli (Avs) and Rosario Pugliese, member of the regional executive of Europa Verde, who are sounding the alarm to the institutions. "We are facing a dynamic that doesn't belong in a civil society," Borrelli attacks. "The Fuorigrotta situation is a Wild West without rules, a challenge hurled at the institutions just steps from a police station. What are we waiting for? Yet another innocent victim?"

The political representatives' request is clear and unequivocal: more patrols and an iron fist to restore safety to a struggling neighborhood. "Residents no longer feel safe even leaving their homes. Their desperate cry must be answered."

A neighborhood on its last legs: between abandonment and defiance of the state

The Maradona affair thus becomes the symbol of a deeper unrest. Residents have been complaining for months about the area's neglect, degradation, and crime, with law enforcement perceived as powerless or absent. The call for extraordinary interventions is now unanimous, clashing with the deafening roar of engines and the fear of going out after dark.

The lie is that Fuorigrotta doesn't deserve to be remembered solely for its nights of anarchy. But without decisive and immediate action, the shadow of decay risks continuing to loom over the homes of those who simply ask to sleep soundly.

What we're seeing in Fuorigrotta is a worrying situation. I wonder how the authorities aren't intervening to stop this violence. Residents deserve to live in a safe and peaceful environment.
