Caserta – Target drug dealing where it thrives: in social gathering places, bars, and youth hangouts. This is the strategy of the Caserta Police Headquarters, which, at the urging of Commissioner Andrea Grassi, issued six "urban bans" ( Daspo ) orders in September against six individuals, aged between 24 and 51, believed to be responsible for turning the municipality of Grazzanise into a drug trafficking hub.
The State Police's preventive action is rooted in the work of the Carabinieri of the Grazzanise station. Their investigation, which culminated in arrests and charges, had already uncovered a drug possession and trafficking ring.
Analyzing the investigation documents, the Police Headquarters' Anti-Crime Division reconstructed the drug dealing dynamics, determining that on several occasions the illicit sales occurred near public establishments and areas frequented by young people, distorting the social vocation of these places and creating alarm in the community.
To prevent a recurrence of these incidents, Police Commissioner Grassi has therefore resorted to the urban DASPO (Daspo) instrument, provided for by the anti-mafia code. This measure, which lasts a maximum of two years, has a specific goal: to defuse the fuse of crime in already vulnerable social contexts.
The six recipients of the measures—all already known to law enforcement—will therefore be banned from bars, pubs, clubs, and, in general, all public entertainment venues within the municipality for the next 24 months.
This is a targeted intervention that goes beyond simple criminal repression. The goal, as explained by the Police Headquarters, is to sever the toxic link between drug dealing and social life, protecting honest citizens and the youngest from degradation and illegality. A tough response to restore the community of Grazzanise to the serenity and security of being able to enjoy their public spaces without the heavy shadow of drugs.
The idea of an urban Daspo seems right, but I wonder if it really works. I don't know if the measures are enough to stop drug dealing in bars and public places. Let's hope there are visible results in the future to improve the situation.
