Castellammare di Stabia - A thick, menacing column of black smoke darkened the afternoon in Castellammare di Stabia, sparking panic and leading to the closure of one of the region's main arteries.

A large fire broke out in an abandoned lot on Via Cupa San Marco, a short distance from the busy viaduct of the 145 Sorrentina state road.

The flames , of considerable proportions, created a blaze that, in addition to spreading a pungent odor, made the air unbreathable. The land, already under judicial seizure, further complicated the extinguishing operations.

The Fire Brigade , the Carabinieri, the Municipal Police and the Civil Protection volunteers promptly intervened on site , engaged in a race against time to put out the fire and guarantee the safety of the citizens.

Inconveniences and precautions: the San Marco viaduct is closed.

To allow rescuers to operate safely and protect motorists, the Sorrentina state road 145 has been closed in both directions, between Castellammare di Stabia and Gragnano, starting at 18:30 PM. In agreement with Anas and the Fire Brigade, the San Marco viaduct has been closed to traffic.

The closure has obviously caused significant traffic disruption, with traffic being diverted with on-site signs. Those heading to the Sorrento Peninsula must exit at Castellammare Centro, while those heading towards Naples must exit at Gragnano.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, Luigi Vicinanza, has urged local residents, as a precaution, to keep their windows closed and not use air conditioning to avoid inhaling toxic fumes. Operations to restore traffic are continuing unabated, while efforts are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
