A landing straight out of a movie, but one that has sparked a political and institutional storm. In Forio d' Ischia , in the picturesque Piazzale del Soccorso, next to the 14th-century church overlooking the sea, a helicopter landed yesterday in the town center to deliver flowers for tennis player Venus Williams ' wedding.
A spectacular gesture that, however, infuriated citizens and institutions: according to reconstructions, the authorization came only from the municipality's heritage and environment office, without any involvement of the competent authorities.
The serious issue, witnesses and associations report, is that the landing occurred without safety measures: no presence of the Municipal Police, Carabinieri, or Fire Brigade. This incident, Europa Verde emphasizes, is inconsistent with the extremely strict procedures required even for air rescue in the event of a medical emergency.
"An unacceptable scandal ," attack MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and city councilor Domenico Loffredo. " Every regulation was circumvented for a wedding, when saving a life requires permits and stringent controls. Ischia cannot be transformed into a playground for the rich at the expense of public safety. We demand immediate clarity and intervention from ENAC: such abuses must never happen again."
It's incredible that a plane could land in the middle of a residential area without the proper precautions. Citizens deserve more respect and attention from the institutions; the law cannot be ignored.
The helicopter landing to deliver flowers to Venus Williams's wedding sounds like something out of a movie, but the lack of authorization is worrying and highlights the shortcomings of local authorities. Public safety must be a priority.
