Naples: It wasn't just any night, but yet another straw that broke the camel's back. In the heart of the historic center, just steps from the most famous alleys, an impromptu concert and fireworks exploded at midnight, rekindling the never-ending conflict between the city's unbridled nightlife and its residents' right to rest.

The residents' protest, now indefinite, finds new impetus in an episode recounted by a citizen to the regional councilor of the Green Left, Francesco Emilio Borrelli.

"Last night, in an alley below my house, they started a concert after midnight. The music was blaring, perfectly audible up to the fourth floor, and fireworks were going off between the buildings," the woman said, describing a scene that was becoming increasingly common. "It was a birthday party.

I don't dare to imagine the residents on the lower floors. In Naples, firecrackers go off every day, for any trivial matter and at any time, in clear violation of the law."

A cry of alarm that captures a degradation that has become unbearable and is pushing politicians to return to a thorny issue. Borrelli, speaking on the issue, used harsh and unequivocal tones: "We can no longer tolerate the right to entertainment turning into an abuse of residents. Impromptu concerts at midnight, fireworks under windows, scooters, and loud music are not folklore, but incivility and danger."

The solution, according to the councilor, can only be found in "clear rules, effective controls, and viable alternatives." The idea of relocating part of the nightlife to less densely populated and currently run-down areas seems to be gaining increasing traction, as a way to reconcile the economic needs of the venues with the livability of the city center.

The City Council is working on new anti-nightlife measures, including the early closing of businesses and a ban on the sale of alcohol and takeaway drinks during the night. The issue remains complex: how to ensure safety and tranquility for residents without stifling the neighborhood economy? And, above all, how to make the peripheral areas suitable for hosting the "exiled" nightlife attractive and safe?

The challenge is on. The future of Naples' historic center depends on finding a sustainable balance, where the protection of residents and livability are finally prioritized, without indiscriminate bans but with serious and respected regulations.
