Another night of violence in Naples , once again involving very young people. The latest episode occurred on the Caracciolo seafront, one of the city's busiest areas, a scene not only of strolling and nightlife, but increasingly of attacks and fights between youth gangs.
According to the reconstruction by the police , who are investigating the incident, a minor and his father intervened to defend a friend of the young man, who had been involved in an argument over traffic issues.
Last night, a police patrol was approached by two people who were in a car in Piazza Sannazaro in Naples and who asked to be taken to the hospital.
The police escorted the two to San Paolo Hospital. Doctors diagnosed the boy—a 16-year-old—with a stab wound to the calf, and the father with facial bruises. After receiving treatment, both were able to leave the hospital. After receiving their report, the officers began searching for the attackers.
The episode, which follows other recent cases of urban violence against minors in the city, raises the alarm again about the phenomenon of so-called baby gangs , a phenomenon which is growing despite the presence of law enforcement in the area and repeated institutional appeals for more civil and responsible behaviour.
The Prefect of Naples expresses concern over the escalation of crime.
Prefect Michele di Bari, informed of the incident, ordered the immediate strengthening of surveillance along the seafront, announcing that the matter would be brought before the next Committee for Public Order and Safety.
“The city cannot be held hostage by gangs of youths,” he declared. “A rapid and coordinated intervention is needed to restore serenity to citizens and social spaces.”
The Neapolitan waterfront, a showcase for the city and a gathering place for families and tourists, thus risks becoming a battleground for youth gangs who use violence as their daily language. This escalation is challenging institutions, families, and schools, while the news continues to paint a picture of Naples where nightlife is increasingly tainted by the dark side of juvenile delinquency.
