Naples – A man paid €42 to leave his car in a private garage for six hours, but upon his return, he was shocked to discover that it wasn't in the garage, but parked on the street in a no-parking zone, with the real risk of a fine or towing.

It happened a few days ago to a Neapolitan driver, who had left his car at the “Parking San Gennaro” on Via dei Cimbri, a few steps from Via Duomo.

The incredulous man documented everything with photos and a receipt, sending the material to Green Left MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli , to whom he explained that he had already filed a complaint: "I paid 42 euros for six hours of secure parking," he wrote, "and found my car on the street, and in a no-parking zone to boot. I wouldn't want to find myself having to pay a fine on top of that."

This is not the first time that such incidents have occurred.

The case has brought to light a phenomenon that has been raging in Naples for years: parking has become a shady business, with unauthorized parking attendants and obscure garages.

"It's a good thing to report these things, these are real robberies," Borrelli commented. "Not only are citizens being defrauded, but cars, instead of being looked after, are left on the street, risking fines and towing. This is further proof that Neapolitans are at the mercy of organized gangs: from illegal parking attendants to garages, parking has become a business for criminals."

The MP recalls how, during his raids on neighborhoods, direct connections to clans that control entire parking lots have emerged several times: "The certainty of impunity fuels a thriving and flourishing market. Strict controls and strict rules are needed, the only true barrier to dishonesty."

The Via dei Cimbri incident, therefore, is not an isolated case, but a snapshot of a widespread system in the city, in which the motorist is the weakest party: forced to choose between the risk of an illegal parking attendant, often operating under the shadow of the Camorra, and that of private garages that promise safety and then, as in this case, turn into traps.
