Naples – An illegal ambulance, used by a nursing home, was seized because it lacked insurance and a valid MOT. This is the most high-profile case to emerge from an intensive roadside patrol conducted by the Carabinieri of the Naples Mobile Radio Unit.
For 72 hours, the military conducted a comprehensive road safety operation, identifying 402 people and checking 182 vehicles, including 21 with foreign license plates. The final count was 75 traffic violations.
The seizure of the medical car
The most significant moment of the checks occurred when the Carabinieri stopped a BMW X3 used as a medical car, not currently engaged in emergency service. The vehicle, owned by a company that manages a retirement home, was immediately found to be illegal: it lacked valid insurance and a technical inspection.
For this reason, the military ordered its administrative seizure and suspension of circulation, highlighting a very serious security breach, especially for a vehicle that should provide assistance.
Penalties: A Catalogue of Road Dangers
The 75 fines imposed paint a worrying picture of the most common violations. The following stand out in particular:
25 vehicles without a technical inspection.
13 vehicles driving without insurance coverage.
7 fines for riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
Violations that turn every journey into a risk, not only for those who undertake them but for the entire community.
The most serious incidents: money laundering, driving without a license, and drugs
In addition to the fines, the investigation led to reports of far more serious crimes. A 42-year-old woman was charged with money laundering and suppression of authentic documents after being found driving a car with Polish license plates, whose chassis number was altered.
Three people were reported to the police for being caught driving without a license , some of them repeat offenders. A 37-year-old man was charged with unlawful possession of a knife (a switchblade). Four drivers were reported to the Prefecture for being in possession of small quantities of narcotics.
The Mobile Radio Unit's operation confirms the police's commitment to ongoing prevention, but also highlights the numerous critical issues that still undermine safety on Naples' streets.
It was a major operation, but I don't understand how a medical car could be uninsured. This is very serious for everyone's safety. I hope there are more checks in the future.
