Naples – A story that reveals not only the cruelty of two young men, but also the poison of racial hatred that continues to creep into the neighborhoods of Italian cities. In Naples, a twenty-year-old girl of Gambian origin was the victim of insults, spitting, threats, and physical attacks by a group of her peers.

Among them, two young people—one adult and the other minor—were subject to precautionary measures issued by the Naples Prosecutor's Office and the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office respectively: the former was ordered to remain away from the group and wear an electronic bracelet, while the latter was placed in a community.

A nightmare that lasted almost a year

According to the investigation, the young woman had been the target of harassment since November 2024. Every time she went shopping, she risked running into that group of boys who insulted her with discriminatory and racially hateful comments.

The abusive words escalated into increasingly violent stalking, culminating in the most recent episode: spitting in her face, an attempt to run her over with a car, and the theft of the cell phone she was using to record the incident. Only the intervention of several passersby allowed her to escape the attack and save the footage, crucial to the investigation.

The evidence and the complaint

The victim provided investigators with videos and photos documenting the abuse.

Material which, in the words of the juvenile prosecutor Patrizia Imperato, “indisputably documents the harassment suffered”.

For the investigators, the picture is clear: it is not a simple "prank", but a repeated, systematic behaviour, and above all full of racial hatred.

The social problem behind the case

The incident raises profound questions. What drives two young men, both with no criminal record, to commit such serious acts that risk endangering the life of a girl their own age? The answer cannot be limited to a single incident: it reflects a climate of intolerance that thrives in the most fragile social contexts, where diversity becomes an easy target and violence is a daily language.

Racist insults and brutality are not an isolated phenomenon. Several reports—from anti-racist associations to the National Observatory Against Discrimination—have noted an increase in similar incidents, often dismissed as "acts of bullying." But the line is thin: when words become threats, when taunting turns into physical aggression, we are dealing with a full-blown hate crime.

The reaction of the institutions and the role of society

Precautionary measures represent a first sign, but they are not enough. The Naples incident highlights the need for collective commitment: schools, families, and communities must take responsibility for educating people about coexistence and respect for diversity. Every silent or minimized incident of racism risks fueling a toxic climate, where violence becomes the norm.

A young woman who only asks to live her life

Behind this story there is not only a judicial chronicle, but the broken life of a twenty-year-old girl, daughter of immigrants who work honestly in NapoliA young woman who simply wanted to carry out everyday tasks, like going grocery shopping, instead faced a nightmare of insults and attacks. Her courageous statement is now an act of civil resistance against hatred.

It's truly sad to see how society can be so violent and hateful. These kids don't think about the consequences of their actions, and this episode demonstrates that there's a serious problem of intolerance that needs to be addressed. A person's life should never be put in danger because of race.
