Piedimonte Matese – A night of fear struck the roads of the upper Caserta area, where a 37-year-old motorcyclist was injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver. The collision occurred late Saturday evening at the intersection of Via Semara Santa Lucia and Viale Carlo VI, an area previously reported as particularly dangerous for traffic.
According to the reconstruction carried out by the Carabinieri of the Operational and Radiomobile Unit of the Piedimonte Matese Company, the accident was caused by an off-road vehicle with English license plates, driven by a 59-year-old local man.
The man, with a criminal record, allegedly disobeyed the stop sign and entered the intersection without giving way, hitting a Benelli motorcycle that was proceeding normally.
The motorcyclist, a resident of Castello del Matese, was thrown onto the asphalt after the impact, suffering multiple injuries, including a fractured right tibia. Rescued by 118, he was rushed to the Piedimonte Matese hospital. Doctors ruled out any life-threatening injuries, although his recovery time is expected to be long.
The driver tested positive for alcohol
The Carabinieri who responded to the scene administered a breathalyzer test to the driver of the SUV, which returned a positive result: 1,13 grams per liter, more than double the legal limit. The man was immediately charged with driving under the influence of alcohol , and the vehicle was impounded.
Investigations are underway to verify the legality of the documents of the foreign-registered vehicle, while those relating to the motorcycle have been found to be in order.
The incident has rekindled attention to road safety in the Matese area. "Failure to give way remains one of the main causes of accidents," investigative sources explain, emphasizing that alcohol abuse while driving is an aggravating factor that endangers not only the offender but also other road users.
